Conversation 1 : Are you a student?
Translation
- Are you a student?
- Yes, I'm a university student.
- From which university? ( You are a student of which university? )
- I'm a Beijing University student.
- What is your major? ( You are studiying what speciality ? )
- I study Chinese. Professor Li is teaching us.
Conversation 2 : Do you speak English?
Translation
- Are you learning a foreign language?
- I'm learning English. Do you speak English?
- A little. What about your oral english?
- Bad. How is your English?
- Not that bad. Our teacher teaches relatively good.
- Do you think English is difficult to learn.
- Not too difficult, but you have to hear it a lot and to speak it a lot.
Grammar
The structural particle 得
Simple complement of degree is usually made of an adjective and the structural particle 得 which is used to connect the verb and its complement of degree.
The negative form is made by adding 不 before the complement.
The negative form is made by adding 不 before the complement.
Examples:
- 他 英语 说 得 很好。( He speaks English very well )
- 你 汉语 说 得 怎么样? ( How is your English? )
- 她 汉语 教 得 很好。( She teaches English very well )
Direct and indirect object
The verb 教 (jiāo) can take two objects. The first one, mostly a personal noun or pronoun, is called an indirect object and the second one, mostly a noun of non-personal reference, is named the direct object.
Examples:
- 王老师 教 我们 口语。( Professor Wang teaches spoken language to us )
- 张老师 教 他们 语法。( Professor Zhang teaches grammar to them )
The modal particle 吧
The usage of the modal particle 吧 (ba) is to express as interrogatives tone of a guess.
Examples:
- 你是学生吧?( You're a student ? )
- 她会说英语吧?( She can speak english ? )
- 你去北京吧?( You're going to Beijing ? )
